Birds of Paradise (Folio Society Limited Edition)

Birds of Paradise (Folio Society Limited Edition)

SOLD

Folio Society limited facsimile edition. First edition thus. Numbered on limitation page, 73 of 1000. Signed by David Attenborough at end of introduction.

This volume presents a collaborative effort between the Folio Society and Attenborough. In this first foray, Attenborough’s lesser-known hobby of collecting late 19th century volumes and prints of birds was brough into the public eye in a truly stunning manner.

Considered as one of the “last great bird books of the 19th century”, Sharpe’s Monograph of the Paradiseidae was issued to subscribers from 1891 through 1898. Given the substantial costs associated with the production of such volumes, they were issues in very small volumes and cost well beyond the means of all bar the extremely wealthy.

This faithful compiling and reproduction of the original prints was undertaken with the personal guidance of Attenborough and the volume is introduced and signed by him. Each plate is printed on the recto page while the verso are left blank. The elaborate cover illustration was designed by Neil Gower. The plates are all housed in the large main volume and the textual accompaniment is in a smaller companion volume, with an introduction by Erroll Fuller. A truly marvelous achievement and a must for any collector interested in ornithological illustrations during their golden age.

Housed in green buckram slipcase. Bound in quarter green goatskin and green canvas cloth. Spine titling in gilt. Cover illustration in gilt and orange. Introduction by David Attenborough. Companion text volume octavo in size, bound in green canvas cloth in its own slipcase.

Overall condition: excellent. Slipcase and volume bindings fine. Some very mild spotting to preliminaries and some small markings on a small number of pages. Otherwise, a genuinely stunning volume.

Folio Society Limited Edition (73/1000). London: The Folio Society, 2011. Elephant folio. Original quarter dark green morocco and canvas cloth. Pages: 79 full-page colour plates; companion volume: 292.

Please note: This item is very large and heavy. Within Australia, it may require additional postage costs. For international shipping, the postage costs are sure to be substantial. Please contact [email protected] if you would like to discuss a quote regarding postage rates.
