Historic Towns of Australia (SIGNED First Edition)

Historic Towns of Australia (SIGNED First Edition)

Signed by Philip Cox to half title.

A fascinating look into a disappearing Australia. As urbanisation continues the push of development of the Capital cities, many rural Australian towns have been left socially and economically stranded. This effect reaches to every level of society in rural Australia, even the architecture. This volume aims to preserve and present a facet of Australian history that is rapidly vanishing. Cox discusses the establishment and early settlement of twenty-five Australian towns, the influence of events on their development, their character today and their significant buildings and features. His text is accompanied by evocative photography by Stacey.

First Edition. Melbourne: Lansdowne Editions, (1973). 4to. Original black publisher's cloth in original unclipped dust jacket. Pages: 247.

Overall condition: excellent. Dust jacket unclipped, very mild foxing and age toning. Some very sporadic markings to cloth. Contents in near fine condition, some mild age toning towards edges. Otherwise, clean, fresh, and bright. Monotone photographic images present marvellously, clear and detailed. A beautiful copy.

Provenance: From the library of Paul & Wendy Reid. Paul Reid is hailed as one of the minds who helped to shape Canberra. As Chief Architect at the NCDC, Paul's most important role was the organisation and construction of the New Parliament House. He also had a sizeable involvement with all of the major works associated with Canberra. His legacy remains celebrated in various forms at multiple universities within Australia.
