Journals of Excursions in the Alps (First Edition)
William Brockedon (1787-1854), an artist by training, first travelled to the alps when he crossed the Simplon on his route to Italy. He returned to Switzerland and the Alps several times during the 1820s. By his own accounts he crossed the Alps nearly sixty times via thirty different routes. This work offers an account of his travels in 1824-5.
First Edition. London: James Duncan, 1833. Small 8vo. Quarter Cream Buckram over Tan Boards. Pages: xiv, [ii], 376, 8 pages of advertisements. Frontispiece is a folding map.
Bound in original quarter olive cloth over paper boards. Spine lettered in gilt. All edges uncut. Contains three plates for the Cathedral Church of Lichfield Library on front endpapers, as well as early owner's inscription in ink. Contains printed letter confirming the book's de-accession from the Library. Good. Binding sturdy. Earlier repair work done to tighten binding, with tape repairs made to the gutters of the front and rear endpapers. Some rubbing to covers and spine. Contents in very good condition. Minor foxing throughout, more prominent at front and rear and at edges. Frontis folding map is in very good condition. Has some markings, but seams are without tears and folds are clean.
