Le Livre des Livres: Marc Chagall, The Illustrated Books (First Edition)

Le Livre des Livres: Marc Chagall, The Illustrated Books (First Edition)

SORLIER, Charles. Le Livre des Livres: Marc Chagall, The Illustrated Books. Paris: Éditions André Sauret & Éditions Michèle Trinckvel, 1990.

Folio (approx. 265 x 330 mm). Original cream publisher's buckram cloth lettered in black. Colour illustrated dust jacket. 248 pp., colour frontispiece, illustrated throughout with 125 colour and black-and-white illustrations. Text in French and English. First edition.

Charles Sorlier was not merely a scholar of Chagall's printed work — he was its principal craftsman. For decades the master printer at the Mourlot atelier in Paris, he worked directly alongside Chagall on the lithographs that constitute one of the great achievements of twentieth-century printmaking, and brought to this catalogue an intimacy with the material that no outside observer could replicate. Le Livre des Livres documents the full range of Chagall's illustrated books — more than a hundred volumes spanning nearly sixty years, from the early Gogol and Bible illustrations through to the magnificent late editions of Homer and Longus — each reproduced and described with full bibliographic detail. The volume includes warnings about fake lithographs and genuine plates with false signatures AbeBooks, a reminder that in the Chagall market the stakes of accurate documentation are unusually high. As both a reference work for collectors and a survey of one of the richest collaborations between a painter and the printed page in modern times, it has no real rival.

Near fine in a fine unclipped dust jacket. A few hints of spotting and some toning internally, otherwise fine throughout. Unaccompanied by the original slipcase.
