SOLD

Folio Society limited facsimile edition. First edition thus. Numbered on limitation page, 851 of 2750.

Ovid's Metamorphoses is a narrative poem originally written in 8CE. Considered to be Ovid's magnus opus, it chronicles the history of the world from creation to the ascension and deification of Julius Caesar. The work presents as part mythology, part historical study, and comprises of over 250 myths, 15 books, and almost 12-thousand lines.

The title is sourced from Ovid's fascination with the genre of metamorphosis poetry and mythology. While taking inspiration from some of these earlier works of mythology, Ovid's work diverges significantly from his predecessors. The influence of Metamorphoses on later significant works of literature cannot be overstated. Among it's students are William Shakespeare, Geoffrey Chaucer, and Dante Alighieri, to name a few. It has inspired myriad creative works in sculpture, painting, and music. To this day the Metamorphoses continues to be read and inspire new forms in modern media.
