Mummery was renowned for pioneering the ridges and difficult pinnacles of the Alps. His list of climbs remains a remarkable feat. He also pioneered guideless climbing, making the first guideless ascent of the Brevna ridge on Mont Blanc. He dies in 1895 while doing reconnaissance on Nanga Parbat in the Himalayas.

Bound in original tan publisher's buckram. Lettering to spine in gilt on black Morocco panels with gilt margins. Upper edge gilt, others uncut. Very good. Binding tight and sturdy. Spine mildly darkened. Some faint markings to cover boards. Contents in excellent condition. Occasional foxing, more prominent at edges and through prelims. Multiple previous owner's inscriptions inked on first page.
