Nanda Devi (First Edition)

Nanda Devi (First Edition)

The classic account of one of the most celebrated achievements in Himalayan exploration - the first successful expedition to Nanda Devi Sanctuary by Shipton, Tilman, and three Sherpa companions: Angtharkay, Kusang, and Pasang in 1936. The expedition represented a watershed moment for mountaineering in that it proved that small parties travelling light on gear and supplies could achieve what large, well-provisioned parties had failed to do.

First Edition. London: Hodder and Stoughton, 1936. Large 8vo. Original black publisher's cloth. xvi, 310pp. 27 full-page photographic plates with captioned tissue guards. Numerous drawings and illustrated endpapers by Bip Pares.

Bound in original black publisher's cloth. Titling to cover and spine in light blue. Endpapers depict map of Nanda Devi. Good. Sans dust wrapper. Binding sound, square and tight. Some very minor wear to corners and spine ends. Some faint silverfish markings to lower covers. Contents very good. Some foxing internally and along edges. Paper generally fresh and bright, however. Photographic plates well preserved, clear and sharp. Tissue guards with text retained. Bookplate of Malcolm Earlam to front pastedown. W. Williams blind stamp to lower title page.
