Narrative of a Second Voyage in Search of a North-West Passage (First Edition)
SOLD
VERY RARE ACCOUNT OF ROSS'S SECOND EXPEDITION WITH APPENDIX VOLUME INCLUDED.
A truly incredible story of the trials and triumphs of exploration during the 19th century. Highlighted in the discovery of the North Magnetic Pole. Includes a dried and pressed flora specimen from the Arctic.
An account of the four-year expedition lead by Sir John Ross (1777-1856) in search of the North-West Passage. During this journey, Ross's nephew James Clark Ross discovered the North Magnetic Pole.
Due to the failure of his first expedition in 1818, Ross was unable to attain funding for this second expedition from the Admiralty. Instead he relied on securing private funding. During this trip Ross recorded the discovery of King William Sound, an extensive survey of Boothia Peninsula, as well as the aforementioned discovery of the North Magnetic Pole. Incredibly, the crew survived a string of misfortunes, including the loss of their vessel, and were forced to travel by sledge, and winter in a shelter built earlier by the crew of the Fury. When summer approached, they utilised smaller boats and made for open water, where they managed to rendezvous with Ross's old ship, the Isabella.
Throughout the two volumes are many coloured and B/W plates depicting the natives encountered throughout the voyage. Particularly, the Appendix volume contains illustrations detailing the lifestyles of the Esquimaux, as well as 44 pages of vocabulary, and is tail-ended with a report on the natural history of the Arctic.
Rebacked with green cloth, retaining original spine titling. Original decorative cloth covers retained. Spine titling in gilt with decorative gilt margins. All edges uncut.
Overall condition: Very good. Both volumes have been collated and are complete. Rebacked bindings are strong and tight. Some faint markings to the cover boards of main volume. Corners of both volumes a bit bumped with some minor wear, upper corner of main volume more worn. Minor chip and small cracking to spine title card of main volume. Frontispiece of main volume detached and foxed. Otherwise, contents in main volume in excellent condition. Some very scattered foxing here and there. Some plates have a little foxing, others are clear and bright. All coloured plates remain vivid. Folding map and panorama excellently preserved: strong with crisp seams. Appendix volume contains bookplates for the London Assurance Company on front and rear bound endpapers. Frontispiece foxed but portrait engraving unaffected. Again, some very scattered foxing throughout. The signature containing pp.41-89 has loosened from binding, though is still attached. All plates retain original glassine guards (some mildly foxed). Coloured plates remain bright and bold.
Overall, both volumes present beautifully. While some restoration work has been done, they have been preserved excellently.
