Scrambles Amongst The Alps (Deluxe Fourth Edition)
SOLD
Full title: Scrambles Amongst The Alps in the Years 1860-'69.
From the collection of Warwick H. Williams.
A fine-bound deluxe edition of one of the most important mountaineering books published, commonly regarded as the definite edition of the work. Whymper, already perhaps the most famous mountaineer of his time, became obsessed with the idea of making the first ascent of the Matterhorn. His attempt became known as the Disaster on the Matterhorn, and caused the deaths of four of his expedition companions. While the tragedy tempered his legacy, he remains a key figure of early mountaineering literature and his writings and lectures remain important to the historical record of the subject.
Bound in cream publisher's cloth by fine binder Zaehnsdorf, with binders label on FBEP. Covers and spine profusely gilt stamped with snowflake patterns. Titling to spine in gilt on brown Morocco panel. Top edge gilt, other edges uncut. Marbled endpapers.
Overall condition: Very good. Gilt remains bright on covers and top edge. Some wear to head of spine. Mild markings across covers. Contents in very good condition. Some age toning and mild foxing throughout. All contents present. Folding maps in excellent condition. Plates bright and detailed. A very nice copy, highly collectible.
