Shackleton's Last Voyage (First Edition)

Shackleton's Last Voyage (First Edition)

SOLD

Full title: Shackleton's Last Voyage The Story of the Quest From the Official Journal and Private Diary Kept by Dr. A. H. Macklin.

From the collection of Warwick H. Williams.

Contains pamphlet advertising exhibition of Shackleton's final journey. This pamphlet formed part of the facsimile edition of a souvenir collection given out at the Scala Cinema in London for the premier screening of the documentary Southward on the Quest.

An account of Shackleton's final voyage as told by his second in command and successor Frank Wild. The lure of Antarctica was too strong for Shackleton to resist, so he started his fourth and final trip in the ill-suited Quest in 1921, with wildly ambitious objectives. However, when Shackleton died suddenly in South Georgia, Wild took charge of what remained, resulting in this handsome publication reproducing the last photographs of Shackleton to have been taken.

Original Blue Cloth Hardcover. Cover stamped in gilt, black, and white. Illustration of the "Quest" stamped on cover. Illustration of ship mast stamped in gilt on spine. Coloured frontispiece. Photograph of Shackleton tipped-in at page 4. Numerous B/W photographic plates and illustrations throughout.

Overall condition: Excellent. Slight sunning and wearing to spine. Some slight fading to spine lettering gilt. Mild foxing throughout contents. Otherwise, a well-preserved copy that presents beautifully.

First edition. London: Cassell and Company, LTD., 1923. 4to. Original Green cloth hardcover. Pages: frontispiece, xvi, 372, 12 maps, 140 illustrations.

Provenance: From the library of Warwick H. Williams.
