One of the original members of the Alpine Club, Charles Edward Mathews was a leading pioneer of mountaineering. This volume is considered his most important contribution to Alpine literature. It provides a critical analysis of earlier narratives portraying ascents of Mont Blanc, as well as a broader history of attempts to ascend the mountain and descriptions of the various routes taken.

Bound in original black publisher's buckram. Gilt-stamped illustration of Mont Blanc on cover. Lettering on spine stamped in gilt. Upper edge gilt, other edges uncut. W. Williams signature pencilled on FFEP. Near fine. Binding tight and sturdy. Very minor rubbing to corners, Contents near fine, minor age toning to endpapers. Otherwise, volume has been preserved fantastically, contents complete, fresh, and bright.
