First Edition. London: John Murray, 1880. Thick 8vo. Original blue publisher's cloth. xxii, 325pp. 2 folding maps at rear. Numerous plates and illustrations throughout.
Original blue publisher's cloth. Spine lettered and ruled in gilt. Cover ruled in gilt and black with illustration of the 'Matterhorn' in gilt linework. Patterned snowflakes stamped in gilt at border corners. Rear cover ruling in blind. Fair. Previous adhesive repairs made to spine at head and foot, somewhat poorly with adhesive marks showing on outer spine strip. Rubbing to cover boards along edges and at extremities. End papers likely refreshed. Binding separating from signatures at rear endpaper joint, some signatures loosening internally. Contents very good. Some markings here and there. Folding maps in excellent condition. A solid reading copy with a unique provenance.
