An overall beautiful set of a key work by one of the titans of the Heroic Age of Exploration.
Book originally published in German in 1907, this version is the first publication in English.
Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer who led the first successful expedition to cross the Northwest passage in 1906, as well as the first expedition to the South Pole in 1911, beating out Scott's attempt by mere weeks.
This book contains his recounting of Amundsen's traversal of the "Northwest Passage" aboard the Gjøa from Norway to Alaska. The expedition was a pivotal moment in Arctic exploration history. Amundsen and his small crew of six men sailed through the passage that had eluded explorers for centuries, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific oceans via the Arctic archipelago north of Canada.
This copy contains an original promotional pamphlet for the book reading:
"This work forms one of the most valuable and readable of all records of Arctic exploration. The Passage was traversed by seven men in a small herring boat, and the geographical interest of the exploit is well balanced by the scientific value of their discovery and by the personal quality, the humour, and the heroism of the whole achievement. Probably no narrative of Arctic exploration had ever contained a fuller, more vivid, or more entertaining account of the true character of the Eskimo tribes. This is emphatically a book for the general reader. There is a wealth of excellent illustrations of every aspect of the expedition, the country, and of the people, in addition to the necessary maps."
