The South Polar Times (Limited Facsimile Editions)
SOLD
A fine set of this complete facsimile edition, with fascinating articles produced in incredibly difficult conditions, profusely illustrated with Dr. Edward Wilson's sketches and Herbert Ponting's photographs.
4 Volumes comprising facsimiles of the complete collection of The South Polar Times. The first three volumes were published in 2002 and are numbered 110 of 350 total. The fourth volume was published in 2010 and is numbered 280 of 500 total.
The original paper was produced to relieve the boredom of the cold, dark winter nights during the Discovery and Terra Nova expeditions. As well as essays on seals, whales and penguins, there were comic poems, puzzles, stories and cartoons. Scott's comments in his original preface suggest the journal achieved its goal: "I can see again a row of heads bent over a fresh monthly number to scan the latest efforts of our artists, and I can hear the hearty laughter at the sallies of our humourists and the general chaff when some sly allusion found its way home". Volume IV of this facsimile collection contains the previously-unpublished final editions of the publication, with an introduction by Ann Savours.
Original navy buckram with gilt to spines and front boards. Each front board has an inset colour illustration. Silk marker ribbons. Illustrated throughout in colour and black and white.
Overall condition: Near fine. Some minor markings here and there. Otherwise contents fresh, clean, and bright. Silk page marker ribbon of volume four has become frayed from the end up.
